Engine Diagnostics Explained

Diagnostic tests are used to determine what repairs are required on your vehicle to ensure it operates properly. All modern vehicles, have an on-board diagnostics computer interface which is used in conjunction with diagnostic tools and software to help our technicians identify problems much quicker.

The diagnostic test is carried out using a diagnostics scanner that is plugged into a special connector, mostly found under the dash on the driver's side of the vehicle. The scanner receives information regarding the vehicle's model, identification number and engine type.

After scanning the ECU or the onboard computer system, it receives and identifies a specific diagnostic code that relates to a specific problem.

This code is used to help our technicians understand where to look to make the necessary repairs. Some vehicles have a number of units which control areas such as engine management, brakes, suspension and even the windscreen wipers! Performing a car diagnostic test can reveal a range of problems associated with the car’s automatic transmission, oil pump, petrol tank, exhaust system and various other components of the car.

We can't stress enough how important it is to get a warning light checked out as soon as possible. Continuing to drive with an illuminated warning light in the hope it will go away, could potentially result in major damage to your vehicle, and leave you facing an expensive repair bill.

Do you have a dashboard light on?

If you see a warning light illuminated on your dashboard, you may require an engine diagnostic check to help identify potential problems with your vehicle. As technology advances, today’s vehicles are increasingly run and controlled by on board computer systems and therefore require advanced diagnostic technology tools to pin point faults and problems.
